It's not clear this is necessary, but as BIP-0042's mythology has proven to be a source of confusion for many this PR rewrites the BIP to no longer be any fun.

I don't think this is beneficial. The confusion is having a BIP about this at all, rewriting it to be a boring version of history instead isn't going to improve this.
I think the options are doing nothing, adding a big note at the top explaining it is a joke, or deleting it entirely. I prefer one of the first two.

I understand what you're trying to do here, but I also think it's better to keep this as-is. Or add a "this is a joke" header (with additional explanation and historical context) if people genuinely get confused by this often.
I don't think we should accept any more joke BIPs now that bitcoin is more mature, but like the "I'm a teapot" status code for HTTP this is part of the early development culture. I don't think this should be overwritten.
