I think, it will be nice to separate GUI (at least, Qt. Don't know, it wxWidgets one still alive) from bitcoind and don't build "combined" binary. Instead of it, I think, It will be nice to add a way to set address (with IPv6 support, btw) and port where user wants to connect. And set default address value to "localhost" (assumed user installed bitcoind and gui on the same machine by default). But this way will add possibility (for advanced users) to set up bitcoind somewhere far far away and use only GUI part on localhost ;)

This is already on the "would be nice" list but has very low priority. It could be set up in a similar way as Quassel, for which a separate GUI, seperate server, or combined server-GUI can be built.

This is not planned, so closing. It is very unlikely Bitcoin Core's GUI will ever be usable as a RPC client, and there exist other alternatives for this use case so it's not really worth working on either.
