According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases#End_of_Life, Zesty is EOL, so bump to Artful for now.
Note that Artful is going to be EOL soon as well, so I am not sure how to proceed after that.

Maybe we can wait for Bionic to be released
@ken2812221 We should do that if WSL supports Bionic. Though, I am not sure what their schedule is to officially switch from Xenial to Bionic.
No strong opinion but as Bionic will be out so soon I'm not sure it makes sense to do this in the meantime. As you say, artful as non-LTS release is very short-lived.
Also: installing packages from a newer Ubuntu distro on Xenial is still a weird, and potentially breaking thing to do. I hope WSL will switch to Bionic soon and all of this workaround can go!
in any acse if you tested it you have my concept ACK.
I did test by running through the whole readme step by step. Though, as you mention, it definitely breaks (other) things, so I am all for switching to Bionic as soon as WSL has it out.

There are some ways to install Bionic on WSL from squashfs file. However, it's not official.
