Imo we should remove these icons from the Readme, since they serve no purpose.
Locally you can check the build status by typing
make checkand run the functional tests. And for any commit on GitHub, the build status is shown as a tiny icon right next to the commit date of that commit.If we really wanted to keep them, we'd have to update them on every major version branch-off. Not really worth the effort and time.

besides that, even if we want to add this to the README.md at some point I'd prefer to wait a while to see if we get appveyor to be stable and useful in the first place right now, it's failing again
