Is there some new reward scheme like the hacktoberfest T-shirt encouraging people to make single word changes to README.md through the web interface (even using the default commit message and PR title)? Other ones were #20570 and #20559. This keeps coming up the last few days.

Yeah, I deleted my comment because it's not worth debating.

As discussed in the book, Working in Public: The Making and Maintenance of Open Source Software (in which "open source" is not hyphenated throughout, as the term seems to indeed have taken on a life of its own in popular usage), the issue of maintainer attention being the scarce resource and of not encouraging extractive drive-by contributions is probably more important.
