Bitcoin need a plugin system. There are lot of projects based on bitcoin forks. Some are using bitcoin flow, like lighthouse and definitely could be a plug-in. Some are using own network, like twister or namecoin and could be plugin too but another type of plugin, that would use same platform but own network. Shared platform increases robustness and fixes automatically applied to plugins is definitely good approach.
