Is the website intended to be copyrighted? Otherwise "© 2016 Bitcoin Core." should be removed no?

  4. btcdrak commented at 7:06 AM on January 12, 2016: contributor

@Aquentus Copyright is inalienable and exists by default, every line of code, image, or text written has a copyright assignment by default (to the author unless under employment with no specific agreement otherwise). What is important is the license. In any case, it's not a subject for this ticket or this repository.

    Concept ACK

(as in, whatever the new Core site's URL is, we should be pointing to it rather than bitcoin.org)

  9. MarcoFalke commented at 10:47 AM on January 12, 2016: member

Why is this necessary? We already have https://bitcoin.org/en/bitcoin-core/

The new website seems "hardcoded". Why not fork from https://github.com/bitcoin-dot-org/bitcoin.org ?

Who is responsible for the domain and content. Is the process transparent?

Edit: It looks like the source code is available here: https://github.com/bitcoin-core/website.

  10. btcdrak commented at 10:57 AM on January 12, 2016: contributor

@MarcoFalke We need our own voice because bitcoin.org's policies are their own. People conflate bitcoin.org with Bitcoin Core. You can read about the relationship and how it evolved here but this text is not enough, there needs to be physical separation.

The domain is owned by Wladamir, the contributing process is similar to Bitcoin Core see the contribution process in repository.

Concept ACK, but please link from the website to the GitHub source code repo. Otherwise it is really misleading and hard to verify where the content came from.

  12. btcdrak commented at 11:03 AM on January 12, 2016: contributor

please link from the website to the GitHub source code repo.

It is linked in the contribution document.

Otherwise it is really misleading and hard to verify where the content came from.

linked from my comment, maybe we crossed streams :)

Would you also need to update the website in "contrib/debian"?

FYI: bitcoincore.org transfer is still in progress, all the necessary steps have been followed, the estimate from gandi.net is that it will be finished next monday

  24. dexX7 commented at 1:33 PM on January 13, 2016: contributor

    Concept ACK.

I think the domain looks fishy though. If bitcoincore.org is going to be used for the new site, it would be better.

  25. petertodd commented at 5:55 PM on January 13, 2016: contributor

@laanwj Lets wait if it's just a few more days; no need to cause a lot of confusion.

  26. maaku commented at 7:54 PM on January 13, 2016: contributor

@btcdrak It is my understanding that bitcoin.org was very purposefully setup to NOT be run by the people who are making most of the changes to the bitcoin reference implementation. The people writing the software are not the people hosting the binaries. This was very much a conscious decision for the purpose of ensuring checks and balances in a decentralized development process.

Having a portion of the site website that the developers control the content of is good -- it has allowed us to make the statements and FAQs which have been beneficial to community relations. But changing the reference website to be something under our control is eliminating checks and balances that were set in place to protect the user. I fear for where this project is going if we think that is a good or even just expedient idea.

  27. jonasschnelli commented at 8:03 PM on January 13, 2016: contributor

@maaku: hosting the binaries could still be done on bitcoin.org, though, with gpg signatures and gitian, the importance of the binary hosting is not that big anymore.

Changing the reference website makes sense IMO. I guess some of the core devs do not agree with every action the owners of bitcoin.org took (enabling google analytics (!) / probably enabling ads / de-listing certain wallets). I guess it's important to have a independent website that will be maintained by the same people who are contributing to the bitcoin core code (and this should be the reference website).

  28. btcdrak commented at 8:38 PM on January 13, 2016: contributor

@maaku to clarify there is no intention to move the binaries from bitcoin.org, however, the project needs it's own project website.

  29. laanwj commented at 1:01 PM on January 14, 2016: member

Right: there are no plans to move binary hosting. But making the README.md refer to the project website makes sense, though there's no hurry. We should link the general bitcoin.org site as well as part of talking about the network/currency in general.

    Updated for new URL, bitcoincore.org

  33. laanwj commented at 9:44 AM on January 18, 2016: member

I still think this needs a reference to bitcoin.org, for example in the "What is bitcoin" section.

  39. conor123 commented at 5:48 PM on January 20, 2016: none

I think it would be better to explain a little about why there are 2 websites in the readme file, just plonking bitcoincore.org at the top and having a different site just a few lines down is a bit odd.

  40. MarcoFalke commented at 6:00 PM on January 20, 2016: member

It already says "For more information, as well as [binaries]" ...

Though, you are welcome to improve it.

  41. laanwj commented at 4:43 PM on January 21, 2016: member

@conor123 bitcoin.org is about bitcoin in general, bitcoincore.org is specifically about this project
