Consider enabling plugin=wayland for bitcoincore.org builds #916

Please describe the feature you’d like to see added.

Wayland is the new standard on Linux these days, pretty much every major distro and DE is on board. And given that #914 has solved some of the remaining issues (bitcoin-qt specific), I think it’s safe to enable plugin=wayland by default for builds on bitcoincore.org.

Furthermore, I would like to point out (again) that #817 not working is a direct result of older compositors lacking XDG activation protocol support, not necessarily a problem with the code or Wayland.

So given that there are still users stuck with older software that lack this protocol, would it be reasonable to consider doing this by the time Ubuntu 26.04 is released?

I also want to make it clear that I am not suggesting disabling plugin=xcb, but rather enabling plugin=wayland in addition, specifically for Wayland environments.

    Thanks!

A discussion on this topic took place in https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/22708.

The main concern raised was the introduction of additional dependencies: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/22708#issuecomment-1100861599.

Ah, I understand. As someone who doesn’t use depends and compiles their own builds this doesn’t affect me. I guess not a lot has changed when it comes to “additional dependencies”, so I’ll just close this.
