Having size() and data() methods makes these work more nicely with spans and multiprocess serialization code

ACX 46fe1d1a1d39030d54eeeefca181c0bd9429c90d I've made exactly the same change once to use Span for HexStr (which only resulted in #19373 for now because there were some more complications).
