Wallet passpharse #31852

    Is there an existing issue for this?

    • I have searched the existing issues

    Current behaviour

    I’m using a passphrase for my encrypted wallets—8 in total.

    This passphrase is: (space “thekey” \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ ) “ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ )”

    I use this passphrase for all my wallets (total: 2.4 BTC), but now it doesn’t work as usual. I tried creating a new wallet with the same passphrase, and I encountered the same issue.

    You can review my question and all the comments here,

    I think stack exchange is the best place for this usage question but you need to be a bit more cool to people who are trying to help you there. The issue tracker here is only for technical issues with the software. If you actually discover one of those (maybe like, walletpassphrase doesn’t work if passphrase contains a backslash?) please open an issue for that.

    You can update this issue if you can rephrase it according to our guidelines otherwise it’s likely to be closed as won’t-fix

    Does your passphrase has quotes (" or ') in it? If so, you will need to escape them when using the RPC console. If your password also has the space character, then entire passphrase will need to be surrounded with quotes so that the space is recognized as part of the passphrase.

    Are you able to enter your passphrase in the GUI prompt (not the RPC console) without any escaping or quotes (that are not part of the passphrase itself)? If so, I suggest that you use the GUI’s change passphrase feature to change the passphrase to an alphanumeric one so that it is easier to enter in the RPC console.
  8. InnDe commented at 11:49 pm on February 12, 2025: none

    Yes, I did. I tried to change passpharse in GUI prompt, i had the same problem, even in new test wallets I’ve created with same passpharse, the same problem

    Does it still work with that version (thereby implying a regression in newer versions)?

    I can’t reproduce with walletpassphrasechange '(space “thekey” \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ ) “ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ )”' 'new_' (it passes fine for me locally) on a freshly created wallet.

    Please provide full (and exact) steps to reproduce on a freshly created wallet.

    @innde We don’t know how you created the wallet, and set its password in the first place, making it impossible to reproduce.

    Can you give the full and exact reproduction steps, from scratch, from starting bitcoin-qt, to creating the wallet, to trying to unlock it, and observing it is not working.

  19. InnDe commented at 1:56 pm on February 13, 2025: none

    Yes, I can help you with that. Through Bitcoin Core interface: File → Create Wallet → Set Name → Encrypt Wallet – \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ That’s all.

    I can’t reproduce. Though, I am on Linux.

    Does it also happen when you copy-paste the exact same password into both places? Does it happen when you use the on-screen software keyboard instead of the hardware one?

  21. willcl-ark commented at 2:20 pm on February 13, 2025: member

    If we are going to be able to reproduce it, the instructions will need to be reproducible by someone. I can’t reproduce yours currently. My recommendation would be to, whilst using a computer, write out the instructions in a codeblock as @maflcko suggested. They should look something like this at the end:

    ```bash
     0# Start bitcoind
     1bitcoind
     2
     3# Create new wallet
     4bitcoin-cli createwallet test-wallet false false " \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \"
     5
     6# reload wallet
     7bitcoin-cli unload wallet "test-wallet"
     8bitcoin-cli load wallet "test-wallet"
     9
    10# Show decryption failure
    11bitcoin-cli walletpassphrase  " \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \" 120
    ```

    If the steps are not clear-enough, nobody may be able to reproduce them if there is a legitimate bug.

    If you’ve used Bitcoin-Qt to create the wallet that’s OK, but please at least use codeblocks for any wallet name and passphrase so that others can copy/paste it exactly.

    Ok, well, if the password you set when creating the wallet in the GUI is \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \, then the command in the debug console should be walletpassphrase '\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \' 800, or walletpassphrase "\\ \\ \\ \\ \\ \\ \\ \\ \\ \\ \\ \\" 800, because of backslash quoting.

    But I cannot explain why you’re not seeing any output at all. The response to the walletpassphrase command, you should get either (null) as output when the password is correct, or Error: The wallet passphrase entered was incorrect. (code -14) if it is incorrect. I cannot reproduce your lack of output at all.

    I am able to reproduce the issue on Windows with this passphrase \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \. I will need some time to share more information.

    Sorry it isn’t an issue and just need to use the right format. Tried with different types of wallets (legacy, descriptor), different versions of bitcoin core on windows and linux. Below commands should work on Wndows:

    bitcoin-qt:

    0walletpassphrase ' \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \' 800

    bitcoin-cli:

    0bitcoin-cli -rpcwallet=wallet_name walletpassphrase " \\ \\ \\ \\ \\ \\ \\ \\ \\ \\ \\ \\" 800

    Now that I look back this feels like social engineering attempt or a troll.

    Anyways if @InnDe you are able to access your wallet, please let us know.

    Absent anyone else being able to reproduce, you could of course also try to reproduce on Linux or macOS. This could rule out an issue specific to your Windows setup.
