20 minute delay before the UI gives me any status information after replacing wallet.dat #4642

I installed 0.9.2.1-win64, copied bootstrap.dat, allowed Bitcoin to catch mostly up (4 weeks behind current) and shut down Bitcoin. I copied an old wallet.dat to replace the existing wallet.dat. I started Bitcoin.

The bitcoin-qt icon appears in my system tray, and mousing over it shows tooltip text 'Bitcoin Client'. Left clicking on the systray icon does nothing. Right clicking on the systray icon does nothing. Doubleclicking on the systray icon does nothing. The GUI does not appear. The program's icon does not appear alongside the other open programs in my taskbar.

My task manager shows 851 Mb of memory use by bitcoin-qt.exe; and 5-10% CPU usage.

As I write this, my wallet FINALLY popped up with the correct information. I estimate the total time to load this wallet was 15-20 minutes on an i7, quad core 2.2GHz.

This is a really long time for a user to not know what's going on.

The splash screen didn't appear and tell you what it's doing?

@laanwj I'm not sure if it appeared at all. If it did, it disappeared before I saw it. I did minimize the windows on both my monitors to look for a splash screen but there was none there.

Well the intention is that a splash screen appears immediately after the program is started, which only disappears right before the main window opens or you click on the splash screen to make it go away. This splash screen has a status indicator that tells the user what it's doing. In git master it even shows a % indicator on rescans.

Standby I will repeat my steps. It's likely I clicked on the splash screen by accident.

But yes it would be nice if the splash just minimized when clicking on it instead of disappearing permanently.

@laanwj I do see the splash screen. It takes up about 1/9 of my screen making it easy to click and dismiss.

I suggest that you take the status text that appears along the bottom of the splash screen, and put this text as a tooltip, when I hover over the systray icon.

This way I have a way to see what's going on after closing the splash screen but before the GUI appears.
