We don't use the gold linker. binutils-gold just installs binutils (and the gold linker) in any case.

binutils-gold just installs binutils (and the gold linker) in any case.
On supported Debian and Ubuntu distros, the
binutils-goldis a virtual package which provides thebinutilsone, and the latter in turn does install the gold linker anyway.Of course, non-Debian-based distros can have different package structure.
FWIW, another virtual package, which we mention in our docs, is
