Starting the client without a wallet.dat in the directory and generating one causes the client to spend a few minutes rescanning the blockchain (blockchain already downloaded). The chances of generating a key which is already used is so low, why waste time doing this?

I know I should have filed it sooner. :) Thanks. Should we close this one then? Yea this behavior doesn't make sense as then new addresses should also scan the entire wallet.
